FoodSHIFT 2030
About this good practice
The FoodSHIFT 2030 framework focuses on increasing the technological and societal readiness levels of food system innovations in nine selected city-regions across Europe. It focuses on identifying, maturing and scaling-up citizen-led innovations in the local communities that respond to social and environmental challenges, using sustainable design and circular economy principles to help scale and grow initiatives to become economically viable and socially valuable.
The project establishes FoodSHIFT Accelerator Labs for maturing, combining, upscaling and multiplying existing food system innovations across nine front-runner cityregions and FoodSHIFT Enabler Labs in twenty-seven follower city-regions.
The FoodSHIFT2030 approach focuses on supporting innovation towards a fast transition of the European food system by 2030, which is necessary in order to address the pressing challenges for food and nutrition security, contribute to the EU commitment of reducing GHG emissions by at least 40% by 2030, and revitalize urban-rural linkages and partnerships to secure the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.

Evidence of success
As of April 2022 FoodSHIFT2030 has selected over 30 place-based food partnerships to join the European wide project as FoodSHIFT fellow city-regions.
The fellow city-regions have been paired with one of the 9 already established FoodSHIFT Accelerator Labs (FALs); city-based partnerships of engaged citizens, NGOs, SMEs, researchers, local administration and policy makers, located in Barcelona, Bari, Wroclow, Ostende, Copenhagen, Brasov, Berlin, Avignon and Athens.
Potential for learning or transfer
The project prepared a number of publications, events and resources to empower citizens to shift the European food system. All 9 labs have accomplished implementation of the set goals, so they have experience with challenges and opportunities that came across their way.
