AI Literacy: Requirement Under the AI Act

On February 3, 2025, the European Commission announced that the first provisions of the Artificial Intelligence Act (AI Act) are now in effect. One of the key regulations, Article 4, introduces a new requirement:
➡️ AI system providers and users must ensure an adequate level of AI literacy for their personnel and anyone using AI on their behalf.
To support this, the European AI Office has launched a continuously updated AI literacy best practices repository. This resource gathers real-world examples from organizations that have signed the AI Pact, helping others build AI literacy in a practical way.
The repository categorizes practices based on their level of implementation:
🔹 Fully implemented
🔹 Partially implemented
🔹 Planned
While following these best practices doesn’t automatically ensure compliance with Article 4, they serve as a valuable knowledge-sharing tool to support organizations in improving AI literacy.
The AI Act: A Global First
The AI Act is the world’s first comprehensive legal framework for AI regulation, striking a balance between innovation, protecting fundamental rights, and ensuring responsible AI development.
AI literacy is overall a big theme that will be developed over time. AI4Citizens project is working closely with these matters in all its’ partner countries, cities and organizations so stay tuned for more insights and postings.
Let’s embrace AI with knowledge, responsibility, and a forward-thinking mindset.
