The city of Mechelen (Belgium) has been granted the European Green Leaf Award in 2021 in view of its climate action. In order to continue to spread the climate message with more impact, the city has been working with the hospitality sector ever since.

Upon challenges for the hospitality sector to fulfill the mandatory selective collection of biowaste since January 2021, the city decided together with the hospitality sector in 2023, to launch a call for proposals and a subsidy to private actors who want collect and process kitchen waste according to the highest valorisation principles in circular bio-economy thinking.

The aim is to form innovative consortia who foresee a total solution: not only collecting organic waste in the inner city according to sustainable city logistics (preferably with e-cargobikes), but also diversifying the  process the organic waste in view of new products, energy recuperation or compost.

The city organised together with the Flemish Agency for Innovation and Entrepreneurship a workshop to innovate.
