European Project "CORE" at Ecomondo 2024
On November 7, the Waste Management Office delivered a presentation titled "The South Tyrol System: Technical Choices Over Twenty Years for Organic Waste Collection" at the conference " There’s Something New... or Rather Something Old – New and More Sustainable Scenarios for Organic Waste Collection", organized by Sumus Italia and Assocarta at the Paper District within the Ecomondo 2024 fair.
The presentation outlined the journey undertaken by the Autonomous Province of Bolzano to develop a system for collecting and treating the organic fraction of waste. This includes a centralized anaerobic digestion facility and eight composting plants. Emphasis was placed on the need for very clean materials to arrive at the treatment plants, a focus that led to the adoption of paper bags or unbagged waste in bins as the preferred methods of collection.
During the conference, the CORE project (Composting in Rural Environments) was also introduced. Thanks to the expertise gained over the past 30 years in this field by APPA Bolzano, the Autonomous Province of Bolzano became a project partner. The project's concrete goal is to share experiences and adopt best practices for circular management of organic waste, which can be implemented locally in the Provincial Waste Management Plan.
