Background and Current Projects

READ S.A. has a rich history of facilitating development initiatives. Initially founded as a regional energy agency, it transitioned into a broader development role post-2010. Currently, the agency is actively involved in several significant projects, including two Interreg MED projects (TOURISMO and REVIVE), one LIFE project (GENERA), one ADRION project (PREVENT), and the "Digital Islands" project under the Interreg Europe Programme.

The agency's main objective is to secure European and transnational funding for the region, supporting both regional government projects and initiatives that benefit local municipalities. This involves assisting with the implementation of European projects, such as five ongoing projects for the regional government, alongside READ S.A.'s own endeavors.

Challenges and Opportunities

The South Aegean region faces unique challenges due to its geographical fragmentation. This scattered island geography results in weak spatial economic and social cohesion, substantial intra-regional inequalities, and high transportation costs. Additionally, the region struggles with achieving economies of scale, as each island requires separate critical infrastructure such as ports, hospitals, and educational facilities.

Digital services utilization remains low in the region, hindered by limited digital skills among the population and the high insularity of the islands. These factors necessitate enhanced digital services, particularly in administration, health, and entrepreneurship, to mitigate the challenges posed by remoteness from national and regional centers.

Strategic Focus Areas

The region's strategic planning identifies key areas for improvement, aiming to:

  1. Enhance Everyday Life with Digital Technologies: Implement modern digital technologies to improve the quality of life for residents, particularly on smaller islands.

  1. Support Digital Services Development: Financially support local government organizations and Cultural and Creative Industries (CCIs) in developing digital services for citizens and businesses.

  1. Foster Digital Applications in Culture and Tourism: Encourage the creation of digital applications tailored to the region's predominant tourism and culture sectors.

  1. Advance Telemedicine and Remote Care: Expand telemedicine and remote care solutions, particularly for vulnerable and geographically isolated populations.

  1. Invest in Digital Transformation: Support investments aimed at the digital transformation of local businesses.

Best Practices and Success Stories

The South Aegean region has already implemented several successful digital initiatives:

  1. Custom-Made Learning Platform: A synchronous and asynchronous learning platform for the region's inhabitants, providing training in foreign languages, hospitality, and tourism.

  1. Telemedicine System: Introduced during the COVID-19 pandemic, this system allowed residents on 42 islands to access medical consultations and home monitoring without traveling to the mainland.

  1. Electronic Application Management System (e-PNAI): Available through the region's website, this system allows citizens to complete various administrative procedures online, reducing the need for travel.

  1. astyMOVE and ASTYBUS: A digital app facilitating on-demand public transport on Astypalea Island, enabling residents and visitors to plan their journeys efficiently.

  1. Rhodes Digital Nomads Hub: In collaboration with Cisco, this initiative hosted 17 remote employees in Rhodes, highlighting the island as a potential destination for digital nomads.

  1. Just Go Zero App: A digital solution for waste management in Rhodes, allowing residents to book appointments for recyclable waste collection.

Looking Ahead

The South Aegean region's commitment to digitization and development is evident through these initiatives. By addressing the unique challenges of geographical fragmentation and low digital service utilization, READ S.A. is paving the way for a more connected and cohesive future. Through continuous innovation and strategic investments, the region aims to enhance the quality of life for its residents and establish itself as a leader in digital transformation within Greece.
