Showcasing the power of AI at Umeå University

Interreg Europe funded ENAIBLER project partners recently visited Umeå University in Sweden to initiate capacity building for the project. The event began with a warm welcome from Ulf Hedestig and Mikael Söderström, project partners from Umeå University, followed by Hans Wiklund, the University Director, highlighting the significance of AI for the institution's future. 

The study visit delved into the integration of green energy, disruptive technology, and AI in Umea and Skelleftea, showcasing the potential for sustainable development. Professor Mikael Wiberg at Umeå University delivered an enlightening session on AI tools and their transformative impact on various aspects of our lives, dispelling misconceptions around chatbots and search engines. Associate Professor Leif Sundberg at Umeå University introduced the AI Business Lab remotely, a platform fostering education, research, and collaboration in AI. 

The importance of government governance in AI was emphasized by Theo Andersson from the Swedish Agency for Digital Government, highlighting the need for ethical rules and standards. A workshop on AI in the public sector shared lessons learned, focusing on ethical utilization. 

 

On Day 2, Christer Gronlund from Umeå University discussed ongoing AI research in the MedTech sector, particularly the eHEAR project for accurate ear condition diagnosis. Amanda Bertgren presented the AMHOS Project, revolutionizing patient care through AI-driven resource management. Francesco Di Feola showcased AI technologies for lung cancer diagnosis and prognosis. Klara Mogensen explored supervised learning for medical images, particularly brain scans. 

Professor Kary Framling at from Umeå University emphasized explainable AI in smart environments, promoting transparency and trust. PhD student Susan Sheldrick from the University of Melbourne investigated AI policies for remote SMEs, while Dr. Andreas Theodorou at Umeå University highlighted the need for AI assessment and responsible development. 

The Umeå University study visit for the ENAIBLER project showcased AI's potential across sectors, fostering collaboration and inspiring responsible AI implementation.
