Gender equality in the maritime sector
Women are in minority in maritime professions (shipping, fishing, port engineering, boating, marine energies...). In Brittany, women account for just 10% of seafarers on board ships and 24% of sedentary jobs (among whom 60% in fish processing.) This trend is mirrored in training and education dedicated to the maritime sector, although there has been a timid move towards greater gender diversity.
This gender imbalance has an impact on the competitiveness of industries seeking skilled labour to meet the challenges of society, ecological transition, and innovation.
Brittany would like to improve its policies in terms of vocational guidance, training and employment to promote equality and professional mix in the maritime professions.
Brittany is interested in collaborating with other regions in Europe that have the same desire to address this issue, looking for a partner ready to take the lead of the project.
