In light of the significant Jewish historical and cultural heritage present at local level, the Municipality of Ferrara will play the essential role of Lead Partner in the JEWELS TOUR project.

The Renaissance city of Ferrara, located in the Emilia-Romagna region of Italy, near the PO river Delta, is part of the UNESCO World Heritage list. Here, beyond the precious Jewish quarter, the Jewish Cemetery and the Synagogue (undergoing restoration), it is possible to visit the major National Museum of Judaism and Shoah (MEIS).

The local authority has been working for a long time to strengthen the city’s identity and attractiveness, meanwhile contributing to the promotion of tourism and economic development. As one of the objectives to be reached is to create synergy among the Jewish history and culture and tourism offer, in 2022, the administration signed a Protocol with the local Jewish community, which has ancient origins and is very rooted in the territory.

The Municipality has been involved in many activities for the valorisation of Ferrara’s identity, such as training events, the creation of the Jewish routes and the foundation of “Museo Ferrara”, the virtual museum of the city (constantly updated).

The JEWELS TOUR project is expected to improve the policy instrument of the Emilia-Romagna Region, collaborating to the project as associated partner to enhance the attractiveness regarding the promotion of Jewish Cultural assets as driver for sustainable tourism and regional development.

The local authority, as partner of a rich consortium characterized by an impressive level of expertise in the themes addressed by the project (JH valorization, tourism development), will have the opportunity to acquire knowledge from different sources and best practices exchange.

Apart from its contribution to the knowledge transfer activities, the Municipality of Ferrara, in its Lead Partner role, will coordinate the financial and administrative management of the project activities and deliverables.

The first project meeting is expected to be held in October in the city of Ferrara.

The project coordination team is made up by the EU projects and International Relations Unit and the Tourism and Promotion Unit of the Municipality to ensure the achievement of JEWELS TOUR objectives.
