End of January, French partner Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes Énergie Environnement (AURA-EE) has arranged the third stakeholder meeting as a webinar, followed by a discussion between local stakeholders in the NACAO project. The subject of the webinar was « How to take account of both carbon storage and biodiversity? » and it focused mainly on forest areas and peatland areas; mires.

More specifically, some statistics about carbon sequestration in French forests were presented and then the factors that help to promote biodiversity in these areas:

  • presence of dead wood,
  • senescent stage (succession),
  • number of tree species etc.

On the other hand, there was a focus on mires:

  • how mires are formed,
  • what is their biodiversity,
  • how they function and
  • what is, especially, their link with carbon storage.

These explanations were supplemented by concrete examples from forests experts, and by Delphine Danancher of the Conservatoire des Espaces Naturels de Rhône-Alpes (Rhône-Alpes Nature Conservatory) concerning mires and wetlands in general.
