The New European Bauhaus (NEB) principles - sustainability, aesthetics, and inclusion - are shaping the future of regional planning across Europe. The latest State of the Art Analysis Joint Summary, developed within the NEBA project, provides valuable insights into how regions are integrating these principles into urban and regional development strategies.

The analysis was conducted by the University of Turin, with the support of the Lithuanian Innovation Centre (LIC), assessing the current landscape of NEB implementation in partner regions. The findings highlight existing strengths, policy frameworks, and synergies, while also identifying challenges such as financial constraints and structural barriers that need to be addressed.

“Through this Joint Summary, we examined how NEBA partners are integrating NEB principles in their local contexts. The findings highlight expertise in participatory planning and sustainability, as well as key challenges related to funding and structural limitations,” said Gabriella Racca, who led the preparation of the report.

Key Findings

The analysis revealed three main trends:

  • Some regions have proactively adopted NEB principles, embedding them into urban planning and regeneration strategies.

  • Others are in the early stages of integrating NEB values, focusing on sustainable development and inclusive urban transformation.

  • Policy alignment and funding remain critical factors—successful case studies emphasize the importance of collaboration between local authorities, experts, and design professionals to effectively implement NEB principles.

Next Steps: Advancing NEB in Regional Planning

To successfully integrate NEB principles into regional planning, the report outlines four key areas for action:

  • Capacity Building – Providing training and workshops to enhance expertise in NEB-aligned planning.

  • Policy Alignment – Embedding NEB principles into urban and regional planning frameworks.

  • Stakeholder Engagement – Promoting co-creation and collaboration with citizens, businesses, and policymakers.

  • Interregional Cooperation – Strengthening knowledge exchange and best practice sharing across European regions.
