On 8th of April our project partners Egidijus Kasiulis and Linas Jurevičius (Vytautas Magnus University) took part in the Brussels Hydropower Day 2025, hosted by ETIP HYDROPOWER.

During the event hydropower’s flexibility and storage potential, which is essential for a resilient and decarbonized energy system, was emphasized. The discussion on biodiversity preservation, sediment flow management, and community engagement with real-world examples demonstrated how hydropower can coexist with nature through innovation and collaboration. Climate change was also a key topic, showcasing the essential role of hydropower in adaptation strategies and integrated water resource management.

As building new hydropower dams in Europe remains difficult and challenging, there was a strong call to make better use of existing infrastructure, such as old water mill dams.

The main topics discussed during the event were the added value of hydropower for energy security, flexibility, and storage potential in Europe, Environmental integration of hydropower schemes, and the impact of climate change on water availability and hydropower operations.

Brussels Hydropower Day 2025 highlighted the critical role of hydropower in Europe’s clean energy transition. The event emphasized the need for innovation, smarter use of existing infrastructure, and strong collaboration to ensure a sustainable and resilient energy future.
