Exploring Rural Youth Development in Pomurje Region

From September 9th to 11th, 2024, Rural Youth Future partners convened in the scenic Pomurje region of Slovenia for a study visit hosted by Smart House. The event aimed to showcase youth initiatives in rural regions and provide participants with insights into Slovenia’s policies and practices to agriculture and sustainability. Additionally, the study visit marked the introduction of a new partner, the Regional Development Agency Backa from Serbia, joining as the project’s Discovery Partner.

Day 1: Strategic Discussions on Youth Policies and Rural Development


The first day of the study-visit featured high-level discussions focused on youth policies and strategy. Specifically, the study-visit began with a keynote address from Uroš Kamenšek, Mayor of Puconci, who presented the municipality’s Youth Strategy aimed at fostering greater youth involvement in local decision-making. Jasmin Kukec, Director of Smart House, introduced the Local Development Strategy for 2023–2027, highlighting rural development initiatives that prioritize youth. Doris Letina, representing the Slovenian Rural Youth Association, shared key activities led by young farmers in Slovenia, emphasizing their role in agricultural innovation. 

Showcasing Local Innovation: PONI Program and Creative Youth Initiatives


A key highlight was the presentation of the “PONI of Pomurje project” by Maša Kšela, who showcased successful initiatives in overcoming local challenges through entrepreneurship. Niki Kuhar, a participant of the PONI program, shared his inspiring journey in the program and how he established a thriving business, demonstrating the power of youth-driven initiatives in rural areas.
Additionally, Marko Lenarčič introduced the Association of Creative Youth, a leading youth organization dedicated to creating an inclusive environment and integrating vulnerable groups into society through innovative youth work. This segment underscored the importance of inclusive strategies in fostering broader societal impact.


The day included a televised roundtable, moderated by Barbara Zrimšek, where partners discussed the scalability of youth-led rural initiatives across EU regions. The session concluded with a Steering Committee Meeting, where project partners reviewed their progress and outlined future plans.


Day 2: Immersive Exploration of Pomurje’s Cultural and Agricultural Landscape


The second day offered participants an immersive experience in Pomurje’s cultural and agricultural landscape. Delegates visited the renowned Expano Pavilion, an interactive park blending tradition with modern technology. Highlights included the Panofly virtual flight over Pomurje and the Panofilm 3D journey through the region's history. The visit continued at the Passero Estate, where the owners showcased their innovative approach to winemaking, meat processing, and chocolate craftsmanship. Additionally, partners visited the Touristic Farm PUHAN, where young entrepreneurs offer an authentic Prekmurje culinary experience by producing and preparing traditional dishes from their own farm products. 

We continue our efforts to improve youth policies for rural sustainable development.


This study visit provided invaluable insights into Slovenia’s innovative approaches to rural development, youth engagement, and sustainable agriculture. Participants left inspired by the local initiatives and reaffirmed their commitment to creating a brighter future for rural youth across the EU regions.
