The Harvard Business School's Case Method is a transformative learning-by-doing system that immerses participants in real-world challenges. This method, widely recognized for its effectiveness in business education, encourages learners to analyze detailed scenarios, consider multiple perspectives, and collaboratively devise solutions. By applying this approach, we can create inspiring business cases that highlight successful enterprises and serve as models of best practice for partners and local stakeholders.

Understanding the Harvard Case Method

At its core, the Harvard Case Method involves participants engaging with a real problem, analyzing its intricacies, and exploring various options and viewpoints. This process culminates in a consensus-driven solution. By simulating real-life business dilemmas, the method fosters critical thinking, decision-making skills, and practical knowledge application.

When applied to policy instruments, this method enables policy representatives to dissect sector-specific issues within a region, drawing from real cases or exemplary practices. Guided by a case manager, participants gain a comprehensive understanding of the practice, allowing for an in-depth analysis of its benefits and potential adaptations.

Enhancing Policy Through Case Studies

In our ongoing project UnicornQuest, we have integrated the Harvard Case Method to facilitate peer-exchange sessions, fostering a collaborative environment where best practices and innovative solutions are shared and scrutinized. Each semester, we focus on a real case from a partner region, showcasing how a startup or a 'soonicorn' (a company on the verge of achieving unicorn status) navigates significant challenges with the support and decision-making input from relevant regional authorities.

Showcasing Regional Innovations

At the international session held in Bratislava this Spring, consortium partners presented regionally identified cases. Various companies showcased their unique regional innovations and challenges through their presentations, some examples are:

  • A company as prime example of innovative healthcare solutions
  • A platform connecting employers with international talent
  • A company specializing in advanced robotic solutions
  • A startup focused on sustainable fashion
  • A fintech firm providing innovative payment solutions
  • A tech company developing cutting-edge software solutions
  • An enterprise dedicated to telehealth supporting systems
  • Innovators in nanotechnology for environmental cleanup
  • A company revolutionizing the recycling industry

These presentations underscored the diverse applications of the Harvard Case Method, highlighting how regional enterprises confront and overcome unique challenges through strategic support and informed decision-making.

CONCLUSION

The Harvard Case Method is more than an educational tool; it is a catalyst for practical learning and policy development. By incorporating this method into our projects, we are not only creating inspiring business cases but also fostering a deeper understanding of effective practices. This approach ensures that our partners and local actors are well-equipped to implement innovative solutions and drive regional development.

As we continue to organize CASE peer-exchange sessions, we look forward to uncovering more exemplary practices and sharing insights that can spur sustainable growth and success across various sectors.
