WeSTEMEU and International Telecommunications Union in LT
Last week, Lithuania hosted a special guest – Doreen Bogdan-Martin, Secretary-General of the International Telecommunications Union (ITU).
During a roundtable discussion, representatives from various sectors in Lithuania, including private businesses, government, and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), reflected on Lithuania's digital transformation journey and some of the initiatives that organizations within the country are undertaking to foster digital cooperation and development at both national and international level.
One of the notable highlights of the event was the involvement of the Lithuanian Innovation Centre (LIC). LIC was pleased to note that the ITU Secretary-General had shown a keen interest in promoting women's participation in technology-related activities in Lithuania. As a response to this interest, LIC took the opportunity to showcase the ongoing international initiative called WeSTEMEU.
The significance of ITU Secretary-General's attention provides a platform for WeSTEMEU to gain visibility, not only within partner countries but also at the whole European Union level. This increased visibility is expected to bring more attention to the issue addressed by the project, which is the underrepresentation of women in STEM roles. In summary, this visit and discussion helped draw attention to the important issue of gender diversity in STEM fields and the efforts being made in Lithuania to address this challenge.
