1st Stakeholder meeting

The goal of the meeting was to collectively address the challenges posed by climate change, assess the readiness of infrastructure, and discuss necessary adaptation solutions. It also aimed to promote cooperation between different sectors. Participants had the opportunity to listen to three important presentations.

  • Inese Pommere-Bramane from the Ministry of Climate and Energy shared the latest updates on climate adaptation policies, providing insight into the government's activities, plans, and strategies.
  • Andris Vīksna from the Latvian Environment, Geology, and Meteorology Center presented climate change scenarios and shared risk and vulnerability assessments.
  • Rihards Sirmais from AS “Sadales tīkls” gave an overview of the challenges that affect critical infrastructure and the resilience of electricity supply system under various weather conditions.

During the discussion, several key issues related to the impact of climate change on Vidzeme region were addressed. Challenges related to road maintenance, which is becoming increasingly complex due to climate change, were highlighted. The importance of information exchange in responding to emergencies and mitigating their aftermath was emphasized. It was noted that many municipalities lack local-level climate data, such as how often specific areas are flooded. Participants underscored the need for systematic data collection to enable the use of climate change forecasting tools. The importance of public awareness and engagement in implementing adaptation measures was also highlighted.

This was the first of six planned stakeholder meetings within the project, where the challenges of climate change and opportunities for cooperation between various stakeholders will be further explored. Vidzeme Planning Region will continue to work towards promoting climate-resilient solutions that will enhance the region’s preparedness for future climate challenges, drawing on both local experience and best practices from the project’s partner countries.
