Project Summary
The European Union aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050, an ambitious goal aligned with the European Green Deal and the Paris Agreement. Public transport is critical to this vision, fostering regional and national cohesion while offering sustainable alternatives to private cars across different scales :
- Inter-regional transport: Trains, as the backbone of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), connect major urban hubs.
- Urban transport: Buses and trams ensure mobility within cities.
- Regional transport: Trains and buses improve accessibility in remote areas.
Together, these systems create a sustainable network. However, cross-border (CB) public transport faces significant challenges, such as political, technical, and operational barriers, which make it less competitive than private cars offering flexible door-to-door solutions.
The Challenge:
Currently, only 7% of rail passenger traffic in the EU is cross-border, with a mere 1% increase in CB services between 2001 and 2019. The CROSUSMOB project addresses this gap by fostering competitive and sustainable CB mobility solutions through collaboration and the exchange of best practices among partner regions.
Project Objectives:
CROSUSMOB aims to improve policies at local, regional, and national levels to overcome cross-border mobility barriers. Its key objectives are:
- Establishing CB transport strategies: Embed cross-border mobility into regional and national plans to reflect local needs and opportunities.
- Enabling CB travelers: Encourage citizens to contribute to developing sustainable, resilient, and intelligent intermodal transport systems.
- Simplifying public transport: Make sustainable transport the most attractive option through improved pricing, timetables, and connections.
- Modernizing infrastructure: Expand the availability of CB trains and promote digitalization, interoperability, and infrastructure upgrades.
By tackling these barriers, CROSUSMOB devises a future where sustainable cross-border transport is accessible, efficient, and seamlessly integrated into Europe’s mobility framework.
