The third Cretan Regional Stakeholders’ Meeting for the "DETOCS – DE-carbonizing the TOurism Industry Post Covid-19 Support" project was successfully held on 28th June 2024, with participants joining virtually.

This initiative is part of the Interreg Europe Programme, with CIHEAM-MAICh and the Region of Crete as key contributors from Greece. The DETOCS project aims to enhance policies for decarbonising the tourism sector, particularly focusing on hotel facilities in Crete. It is co-financed by the European Union along with national resources.

The virtual gathering drew a diverse group of stakeholders from academic, research, public, and private sectors. Mr. Angelakis Georgios from CIHEAM-MAICh presented the project's methodology and objectives, detailing the anticipated outcomes and progress to date. Following him, external collaborator Mr. Vourdoubas Ioannis shared the findings from the Eisenhower matrix analysis, based on a questionnaire completed by Cretan stakeholders involved in the DETOCS project. Mr. Vourdoubas also introduced and discussed a newly created not-for-profit website (www.zerocarbonhotels.org) designed to aid hotels and tourism accommodation facilities in reducing or completely eliminating their net carbon emissions in accordance with EU standards.

The meeting included a dynamic discussion session where participants exchanged views and arguments on the decarbonisation of the local tourism industry in the post-Covid-19 era.

The attendees included Mr. Papastefanakis from the Region of Crete, Mr. Fotakis from Heraklion Municipality, Mrs. Litou K. from Platanias Municipality, Mr. Leontarakis Charis from the Union of Hotels in Heraklion, Mr. Stamatakis Em. from the Union of Hotels in Chania, Mr. George Plokamakis from HEDNO, Prof. Zopounidis Kostas and Mr. Gerabinis Efst. from the Technical University of Crete, Mr. Spiriadis Th. from the University of Crete, Mr. Kalogerakis Ant. from the Orthodox Academy of Crete, Mr. Milidakis Efst. from the Organization of Development of Crete, Mr. Sofianos Sp. from the Technical Chamber of Western Crete, and Mr. Lavoutas Em. from the Chania Centre of Heating and Air-conditioning.
