First stakeholder meeting in Romania

Our project partner MeteoRomania organised their 1st Down to Earth Stakeholder Meeting in Romania on the 18th of July! This National Stakeholders Meeting served as a platform to address the critical challenges of depopulation and population aging in Romanian rural areas. The meeting focused on presenting the Down to Earth partnership and discussing topic of year 1: Demographic challenges to improve resilience against environmental risks in rural areas, exploring potential solutions and emphasized the importance of collective efforts, knowledge-sharing, and sustainable investments.

The meeting saw the participation of various organisations, including representatives from the Prime Minister's office, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, academics, farmers' associations and specialised press. Each brought their valuable insights and proposed solutions to encourage young people to return to rural areas, revitalize the agricultural sector, and improve the environment:

  • Investing in Rural Infrastructure: Stakeholders stressed the importance of developing modern social infrastructure, such as schools, roads, healthcare facilities, and recreational spaces, to attract the youth back to rural communities.
  • Climate Change Adaptation: Promoting climate-resilient practices, like afforestation and the use of water reservoirs for irrigation, can help farmers cope with the effects of climate change on their crops.
  • Enhancing Water Management: Efficient water management through the use of catchment basins and improved legislation can conserve this vital resource and benefit agricultural productivity.
  • Knowledge Transfer and Mentorship: Encouraging knowledge transfer from experienced farmers to young graduates through mentorship programs can help preserve traditional agricultural wisdom and attract new talent to the sector.
  • Sustainable Investments: Encouraging investment in rural factories and biotechnology can lead to job creation and attract a skilled workforce to rural areas.

Throughout the meeting, stakeholders emphasized the importance of continuous communication and interaction between all parties involved in the Down to Earth project. Collaboration between government authorities, professional organisations, media, and farmers is indeed crucial to implementing effective policies and practices. Additionally, there was a consensus on disseminating knowledge effectively to create awareness among rural communities about sustainability, climate change, and available support. Clear communication of good practices and policy changes can indeed empower rural dwellers to make informed decisions for their communities' betterment.

By fostering collaboration and implementing the proposed solutions, Romania aims pave the way for a revitalised rural landscape where young people find opportunities, farmers thrive, and sustainable practices ensure a resilient future for all. With continued dedication and cooperation, the Down to Earth project aims to make a significant impact, not only in Romania but also in other countries facing similar challenges globally.
