Second Stakeholder Meeting in Romania

On October 17th, our parner Meteo Romania (National Meteorological Administration of Romania) hosted the second Down to Earth Stakeholder Meeting in Bucharest. This meeting followed the Study Visit in Molise, Italy, where Down to Earth partners discovered how the issues linked the topic of year 1 “Environmental risks related with depopulation and ageing population in rural areas” are addressed. In Romania, each passing year brings escalating challenges in agriculture, characterised by worsening drought conditions, record-breaking high temperatures, and a steady decline in precipitation levels.

Romania stakeholders notably expressed their interest in the SIBaTer project that was discussed during the Study Visit in Molise. The project focuses on identifying and evaluating potential of abandoned and uncultivated lands and compile them in a "Land Bank".

During the discussions, stakeholders addressed a number of challenges related to climate change and depopulation in Romania, emphasising the need for advancing research in agrometeorology. Stakeholders commended the Meteo Romania for its investment in research and innovation, particularly in providing essential real-time data, forecasts, and informational and warning bulletins to support farmers.

When discussing potential good practices related to the Theme of Year 1 of Down to Earth, “Environmental risks related with depopulation and ageing population in rural areas”, Romanian stakeholders identified several interesting opportunities for further knowledge exchange with Down to Earth partners.

The Fisheries and Maritime Affairs Programme was notably identified as instrumental in incentivising the younger generation to remain in more rural regions and pursue activities linked with the sector. This is achieved through various means, such as offering incentives for business development in the fishing sector, promoting tourism, and development of infrastructure in the rural area.

Another key investment lever was also identified in the Strategic Plan for 2023-2027, where one-third of the allocation has been earmarked for environmental initiatives, with a specific focus on the promotion of eco-friendly agricultural practices.

The Romanian Farmers' Club's efforts in offering training programs for young and small-scale farmers also received widespread approval, with a noteworthy enrollment of 100 young farmers. In addition, the Entrepreneur in Agriculture 4.0 program was recognized as a crucial avenue to educate farmers on adapting to the challenges posed by climate changes.

These stakeholders inputs and feedback will support the finalisation of Meteo Romania's first thematic report.

As Down to Earth continues its mission to foster sustainable rural development, these stakeholder meetings serve as crucial forums for collaboration and exchange of ideas and ensure actual impact on rural communities.
