What we will discuss

The Policy Learning Platform will host a workshop on local and regional policies towards greater resilience against droughts and floods in Murcia, Spain, on 26 February 2025.

Europe faces escalating challenges from rising temperatures, with record heat contributing to drier soils, wildfires, droughts, and flooding. One in eight Europeans lives in areas prone to river floods, while 30% in southern Europe face chronic water stress.

In 2023, extreme heat stress reached record levels, amplifying health impacts from climate-related events. Despite this, Europe was 7% wetter than average, with significant river flooding observed.

European regions, cities, farmers, industries and citizens are not yet adequately prepared for these intensifying extreme weather events and must build water resilience to adapt, recover, and address issues like drought, floods, and water pollution.

What you can expect

This workshop will explore policies and strategies to enhance water resilience, featuring insights from European experts and practical examples on water availability, water efficiency, floods and extreme weather events.

The day will consist of:

  • Keynote speeches focusing on the latest trends
  • Presentations of Interreg Europe good practices to share inspiring initiatives
  • Interactive workings groups to foster learning and capacity building
  • Study visit to explore the topic through a real life example
