Croatia | Strengthening Regional Energy Policy

Since joining the EXPRESS project in March 2023, Public Institution REDEA has been actively engaged in fostering knowledge exchange with consortium partners and regional stakeholders to enhance energy self-sufficiency in Međimurje County. Through this collaboration, we have gained invaluable insights into reducing the region’s reliance on imported energy and fossil fuels, paving the way for an increased share of renewable energy sources.
As part of these efforts, REDEA organized a stakeholder focus group to address key challenges and opportunities in the region’s energy transition. During the session, three potential transition scenarios for renewable energy—projected for 2030 and 2050—were presented and analyzed in collaboration with experts. Discussions focused on the financial and social impacts of the current energy sector environment and explored regional strategies to accelerate the shift to locally produced energy. These insights have contributed to a deeper understanding of the region’s energy landscape and will inform future policy development.
Strengthening Regional Energy Policy
REDEA’s involvement in the EXPRESS project has also significantly influenced the refinement of the Međimurje County Energy Efficiency Action Plan. By integrating insights from the consortium and stakeholders, the plan now better supports renewable energy strategies, improves energy efficiency measures, and aligns more closely with EU energy transition goals. This ongoing process ensures that regional energy policies remain actionable and responsive to the challenges of achieving energy self-sufficiency.
Future Steps Towards Sustainability
Looking ahead, REDEA remains committed to reducing Međimurje County’s dependence on fossil fuels by advancing scalable energy models, refining policy recommendations tailored to local needs, and strengthening stakeholder engagement. In the second half of the project, efforts will focus on implementing these models, further enhancing local policies, and positioning Međimurje as a leading example of regional energy self-sufficiency and sustainability in Croatia.
The lessons learned from the EXPRESS consortium and regional stakeholders have been instrumental in shaping strategies for a more sustainable future. REDEA looks forward to continuing this journey and driving meaningful progress in the region’s energy transition.
