Regional Stakeholders Discussions at Croatian Meeting
A significant step towards strengthening the forest-based sector in Međimurje, Croatia, was taken during the 1st Regional Stakeholder Group Meeting. This event, held in Čakovec, brought together key stakeholders from the region, offering a platform for discussions aimed at enhancing the competitiveness and sustainability of local small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the forest industry. Organized by the Public Institution for the Development of the Međimurje County (REDEA), the meeting served as a crucial forum for identifying both challenges and opportunities in the industry.
Objectives and Key Discussions
The meeting's primary goal was to familiarize participants with the FBI4EU project, which focuses on policy development to support SMEs in the forest-based sector. Attendees engaged in a comprehensive SWOT analysis to evaluate internal strengths and weaknesses, as well as external opportunities and threats faced by the sector.
Participants identified several key strengths, including efficient forest management practices, a geographically advantageous location for forest growth, and a young, motivated workforce. The sector also benefits from the availability of quality raw materials and effective forest rejuvenation initiatives.
However, the discussion also highlighted several challenges. Outdated technology, a limited amount of forested land, and a shortage of skilled workers were cited as major weaknesses. Additionally, concerns were raised about the fragmentation of private forest properties and illegal activities such as tree cutting and timber theft.
Opportunities and Threats for Future Development
Despite the challenges, the meeting also shed light on significant opportunities. These included the potential for reforestation initiatives, technological modernization, and the development of long-term afforestation policies. There was also optimism surrounding the idea of creating a sustainable wood supply chain for Međimurje, which could increase the region’s global competitiveness.
On the flip side, threats such as forest diseases, the importation of invasive pests, and the impact of climate change on local forests were major concerns. Extreme weather events and global competition were also identified as external factors that could hinder the sector’s growth.
Institutional and Community Engagement
The meeting saw participation from a range of local and regional institutions, including forest-based enterprises, the Technological-Innovation Center Međimurje, the Croatian Agency for SMEs, Innovations, and Investments, and associations representing private forest owners. These institutions, together with the stakeholders, expressed a shared commitment to fostering a more resilient and competitive forest industry in Međimurje County.
Conclusion and Next Steps
The conclusions from this initial meeting will be integrated into the Međimurje County Development Plan 2021-2027. This will serve as the foundation for future policy recommendations aimed at modernizing the forest-based sector and ensuring its long-term sustainability. As a result, the region is well-positioned to enhance the competitiveness of its SMEs while contributing to the environmental and economic health of the region.
