Viseu Dão Lafões Hosts GreenSPAS Second Study Visit
For the second study visit of the GreenSPAS Project, the partners gathered in the picturesque Viseu Dão Lafões Region in Portugal. This visit, organized by the Intermunicipal Community of Viseu Dão Lafões (CIM Viseu Dão Lafões), offered a special opportunity for participants to share ideas, learn about innovative approaches to sustainability, and explore the deep ecological and cultural heritage of thermal towns.
The visit began at the São Pedro do Sul Thermal Spa, one of the most well-known thermal destinations in Portugal. Dr. Victor Leal, President of São Pedro do Sul Thermal Spa, welcomed the group and presented the exciting plans for the Balneário Rainha Dona Amélia. This new project is a perfect example of how modernizing thermal spa facilities can coexist with preserving their historical significance. It promises to enhance the spa’s offerings, making it an even more prominent destination for health and wellness tourism in Europe.
After the presentation, the group explored the spa’s facilities, discovering the innovative practices that blend traditional thermal treatments with modern wellness services. The visit provided a firsthand look at how these thermal spas are adapting to contemporary needs while staying true to their cultural roots.
The next stop was in Castro Daire, where the group visited the Termas de Carvalhal. This site gave the partners another perspective on Portugal’s rich thermal heritage. Participants explored the spa’s services and learned about the day-to-day operations, offering insight into how thermal tourism can be a vital part of sustainable regional development.
During the study visit, CIM Viseu Dão Lafões also introduced two exciting local projects that showcase their commitment to sustainability and innovation:
- LIFE Nieblas: This groundbreaking environmental project is helping combat desertification and regenerate ecosystems using fog collectors. The partners visited the project site and saw the technology in action, realizing the potential of this innovative solution to help address environmental challenges in arid regions.

Throughout the visit, partners engaged in collaborative discussions and brainstorming sessions. These exchanges allowed everyone to share their experiences, generate new ideas, and strengthen their commitment to integrating sustainable practices into the thermal industry.

The study visit proved to be an enriching experience for everyone involved. The insights gained will be crucial as the GreenSPAS Project moves forward, helping to shape future strategies and actions that will continue to preserve the cultural and natural heritage of Europe’s thermal towns while ensuring their sustainable development.
