Project summary
HeriTION promotes a participatory approach for the sustainable exploitation of cultural heritage in natural protected areas. This approach has a strong link with tourism strategies in such areas, where cultural and natural assets should be integrated, promoted and managed in a holistic way.
Based on the needs identified in previous projects such as Interreg ZEN, Innocastle, or Share (in which some HeriTION partners participated), it was clear that some of the key issues regarding the sustainable valorisation and exploitation of the cultural heritage were connected with a more open, democratic and transparent approach in the implementation of programs and policies . It’s important to take into consideration both public and private heritage owners/actors in the design and implementation of programs, processes and financing mechanisms, as well as to ensure a proper involvement of the local society (attached emotionally to the cultural and historic assets) for all processes connected with the exploitation, use and preservation of “their” Heritage.
To do so, we need to work in the improvement of cultural heritage and tourism related policies from a holistic perspective, trying to promote the real involvement of citizens and also the uptaking of good practices in key areas for the exploitation of our heritage: digitization, participation, innovative financing models, mobility and accessibility.
This project offers a holistic approach for a more resilient cultural heritage, covering key transversal areas that should be interconnected between them to ensure a more efficient use and exploitation of heritage, while trying to balance the potential negative effects that sometimes natural preservation policies have on the preservation or use of the heritage attached to them.
