EU Parliament approves construction products regulation
On 10 April the EU Parliament has given its final green light to the construction products regulation that aims to boost digitalisation, harmonisation and sustainability in the sector.
The new rules will strengthen the single market of construction products and support the green and digitalisation goals of the EU. The regulation was approved by the plenary with 505 votes in favour, 40 votes against and 78 abstentions.
To stimulate sustainability, the new rules list environmental requirements that manufacturers must mention in their declarations of performance and conformity in the future. The regulation also promotes wider uptake of reused construction materials and harmonises rules regarding sustainability criteria used in public procurement.
Additionally, the revised regulation will require products to have a digital product passport so that users could check instructions and information for example via a QR code wherever needed, for example at the worksite.
The approved construction products regulation, with a digital product passport and focus on sustainability, aligns with the INERTWASTE project, and has the potential to enhance inert and inorganic waste valorisation while fostering circular economy.
