The state of waste in the region: rethinking Podravje
A meeting with regional stakeholders was held on 22 February in Maribor (Slovenia) to discuss various aspects related to the INERTWASTE project. With the upcoming TLJ in Maribor, the stakeholders were mostly looking at the suggested good practices to be presented to the partners.
- Strategic research innovative partnership (SRIP) for circular economy
With the lack of specific measures targeting inert waste only, SRIP was validated as a nation wide initiative funded by the national Ministry for Economic Development and Technology. As a nation wide partnership with the headquarters in Maribor (Podravje) it is best suited to present both positive effects of such a partnership and obstacles that are still to be tackled in Slovenia, leading to improvements of national and local policies.
- Public holding
Although the region has no equivalent to waste management that was observed with some other partners of Inertwaste project, the public holding of utility companies in Maribor connected key public service providers and the city ordinance has established a key stakeholder within the holding (Nigrad) as the company to which all waste needs to be hand over. That can be the start of the waste management on the city, and multi-municipal level, and in foreseeable future also regional.
By considering possible god practices to present and what the added value for project partnership would be, the stakeholders exposed several needs that should be addressed within the region and on the national level, therefore the rethinking exercise in Podravje didn’t waste any time of the stakeholders, but set some great points for future work within the city and region.
