Biomass combustion generates a significant amount of bottom ash—often treated as waste. However, a promising initiative developed by ACCIONA in Spain and part of the INERTWASTE Good Practices  demonstrates how this material can be effectively repurposed in road construction.

The approach involves evaluating the technical suitability of biomass bottom ash as a construction material and integrating it into road base layers. The results show clear potential for reducing landfill use, lowering raw material demand, and supporting circular economy goals in the construction sector.

This good practice also puts forward cross-sector collaboration, regulatory alignment, and tangible environmental benefits.
