KARMA’s first working group organized their second workshop event, promoting sustainable practices in construction and building restoration through the presentation of three local initiatives.

Eurokom association, partner of the KARMA project, organized  a significant workshop dedicated to the circular economy in the construction sector,  on  October 28th, 2024. The event  was led by the Working Group 1: Circular Construction and Restoration of Buildings of Public Relevance, composed of representatives from the following organizations: LP – City of Hamburg (DE) Eurokom Association (IT) Public Waste Agency of Flanders (BE).

The workshop’s aim was to promote sustainable practices in construction and building restoration, with a focus on the use of circular materials and minimizing environmental impact. During the event, participants explored best practices, successful case studies, and innovative solutions to address the challenges of integrating circular systems into new and restored buildings. This event featured three key presentations

  • An overview of strategies for recycling construction and demolition waste, with an in-depth case study on Juventus Stadium in Turin, presented by architect Caterina Gironda, an expert in urban planning and the reuse of public and private buildings.
  • Circular Restoration in Roeselare: A detailed analysis of the circular renovation of Roeselare’s City Hall, presented by project leader Ine Lobelle, who is responsible for climate and renovation projects in the city. The presentation highlighted how the local government has successfully implemented circular principles in public construction.
  • Sustainable Construction at the STEM Education Centre in Bergstrasse County: A presentation by Astrid Hartmann (project leader, for the County Bergstrasse) and Dominik Campanella (co-founder of Concular), detailing how the STEM Education Centre was designed and built following circular building principles, supported by digital tools to ensure sustainability and resource tracking.

This workshop therefore offered an opportunity to discuss regulatory, logistical, and technical challenges surrounding the adoption of circular practices in construction and to share effective solutions for fostering sustainable and environmentally responsible architecture.
