Project summary
Lightweighting serves as a pivotal technology driving the advancement of the Green Deal by decreasing energy consumption and lowering CO2 emissions. Recognised for its economic significance, several EU countries began to prioritise lightweighting. While dedicated policies exist, there is a pressing need for cohesion across the EU: Leading countries like Germany, Austria, and Sweden implemented policies fostering lightweighting innovation and competitiveness. Although active in lightweighting, Western and Southern EU countries in contrast lack dedicated policies. In Eastern Europe, lightweighting remains largely unrecognised. This project will focus on sharing best practices to strengthen national and regional policy initiatives across the EU, which in turn will drive environmental improvement, industrial modernisation, job creation, and economic growth through enhanced competitiveness. Lightweight EU will allow improving EU lightweighting right from the regions through enhanced national policies, ensuring efficient implementation of lightweighting technologies.
Lightweight EU’s partnership comprises pioneering and emerging organisations in lightweight policymaking across Europe: Public bodies, innovation agencies, business support organisations and research institutes ensure a holistic approach to high-level policy improvements and facilitate the uptake of innovative policies within and beyond the EU: The partnership welcomes a discovery partner from Ukraine, expanding the project's reach beyond EU borders and facilitating the recovery of their economy through already recognised potential in lightweighting.
Lightweight EU fosters integrated lightweighting policies across the EU, enhancing industry competitiveness and environmental sustainability, aligned with the goals of a "Smarter Europe”. Through strategic policy coordination and knowledge sharing, this project paves the way for a more integrated, innovative, and sustainable European lightweighting industry.
