In an effort to revolutionise the environmental impact of exhibitions, the Region of Central Macedonia presents the 'Just Go Zero - HELEXPO' initiative, implemented by the agency 'International Exhibition of Thessaloniki-HELEXPO'. This practice was implemented during the Detrop & Oenos 2023 exhibitions held in Thessaloniki from 18 to 20 February 2023.

The primary objective of this initiative is to convert exhibition stands into efficient sorting areas, ensuring optimal material recovery. Here's how it works:

Exhibitor responsibilities: Each exhibitor is provided with three small bins, each designated for a specific waste category (organic, recyclable, and non-recyclable). These bins are marked accordingly to facilitate proper separation of materials.

Just Go Zero points: Throughout the exhibition venue, designated collection bins for different waste streams are strategically placed at predetermined points, such as entrances to buildings and canteens, to serve both exhibitors and visitors.

Waste management process: The cleaning staff collects the sorted waste streams separately and transfers them to an intermediate storage area. Subsequently, these materials are transported to certified organic and recyclable materials management units, where they undergo processing and weighing on-site.

Results and Achievements

Organic waste: A total of 600 kg of organic waste was collected and transported to certified facilities for conversion into compost.

Recyclable materials: Approximately 230 kg of recyclable materials, including plastic and paper, were gathered and sent for recycling, thus diverting them from landfills. This effort resulted in significant energy savings equivalent to 1,124 kWh and a reduction of CO2 emissions by 3.11 kg.

Non-recyclable materials: Despite efforts, some materials deemed non-recyclable due to contamination ended up totaling 700 kg. However, the sorting process enabled the diversion of a substantial portion of waste towards composting and recycling.

The "Just Go Zero - HELEXPO" initiative has garnered positive responses from both visitors and exhibitors. By encouraging active participation in waste sorting and promoting the principles of the circular economy, it has paved the way for sustainable practices within the exhibition industry.
