Project summary
The night-time economy has become a crucial component of the economic development in many European towns and cities. This term refers to economic activities occurring between 6 p.m. and 6 a.m. in city and town centers, including cultural events, entertainment, hospitality, nightlife and supporting activities such as transportation, safety and logistics networks. Recognizing the night-time economy's importance to the European Union’s overall economy, social cohesion and cultural life, the NITIES project aims to unite public authorities to maximise the benefits and minimise the negative impacts of night-time activities.
The NITIES (Night-Time Economy Strategies) project assists public authorities in adapting an integrated urban development during night hours, particularly in city centers where night-time activities are concentrated. The project has successfully brought together nine partners from seven countries, including those more experienced in integrating the night-time economy into policy documents (Galway, Tallinn, Vilnius) and those interested in adopting this perspective at the local city level (Zagreb, Warsaw, Sarajevo) and regional level (Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region).
Through the interregional learning process, the project will enhance seven policy instruments, addressing various aspects—social, economic, cultural and environmental—and applied approaches. These include four city strategic documents (Warsaw, Galway, Vilnius, Tallinn, Sarajevo), one cultural sector policy (Zagreb) and one regional operational programme (Friuli Venezia Giulia Region). As a result of the project, public management of the night-time economy will be enhanced, fostering a sustainable and vibrant night-time culture. Additionally, community engagement will be implemented throughout the project duration to ensure residents' and visitors' needs are considered. Finally, the results will be made publicly available, benefiting a wide spectrum of stakeholders.
