The PROXIMITIES project was proudly represented by our project partner, the Southern Regional Assembly, at a recent Interreg Europe Policy Learning Platform workshop, which focused on fostering urban-rural connections. Held online on November 14, 2024, the event brought together policymakers, practitioners, and experts to explore innovative strategies for integrated territorial development.

With urban and rural areas often governed by distinct administrative frameworks, the workshop delved into the benefits of enhanced cooperation. Key topics included sustainable land use, improved public services, and effective natural resource management.

Eoin O’Connor from the Southern Regional Assembly presented the Regional Spatial and Economic Strategy (RSES) for the Southern Region of Ireland. This 12-year strategic framework emphasises balanced, sustainable growth and collaboration across urban and rural territories.

The event also featured inspiring case studies from across Europe, such as innovative approaches to spatial planning in Berlin-Brandenburg, urban-rural linkages in Poland’s Silesian Voivodeship, and community engagement through sport in France.

Participants had the opportunity to learn about practical solutions and share ideas for creating functional, equitable regions that benefit all citizens.
