We are constantly concerned on food loss and waste topic, reflecting the latest EU approaches and international initiatives on CIBUS social media:

  • EUROPEAN COUNCIL POLICIES FOR FOOD WASTE:
    • Wasting food puts unnecessary pressure on natural resources and affects food security. Therefore, European Union rules aim to prevent and reduce food loss and food waste.
  • FROM FARM to FORK: The EU food system ensures fresh and safe food for over 400 million European citizens. Food production is not only a vital service but also a source of income. The EU agri-food chain is a major economic sector of the EU. Making Europe’s food healthier and more sustainable is the main goal of the EU’s farm to fork policy work.
  • INSPIRATIONAL PROJECTS FOR REDUCING FOOD LOSS AND WASTE: REFRESH Brochure. Details are presented on CIBUS Facebook.
  • Recommendations for Action in Food Waste Prevention Developed by the EU Platform on Food Losses and Food Waste:
    • The EU and its Member States are committed to meeting the food loss and waste reduction targets adopted by the United Nations General Assembly as part of the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda.

    • In line with the integrated, holistic approach needed to tackle food waste without compromising food safety, the recommendations of the EU Platform address action required at each stage of the food supply chain (including food redistribution) and involving all key players from the public and private sectors.

    • The primary focus of food waste prevention should be to act at the source by limiting the generation of surplus food at each stage of the food supply chain (i.e. production, processing, distribution and consumption) and, if such surplus arises, to recover them and ensure the highest value use of food resources, in line with the waste prevention hierarchy.

    • The recommendations are addressed to both public and private entities, suggesting relevant actions for specific players and, importantly, calling for cooperation amongst the different actors concerned. Whilst the recommendations are not an exhaustive list of all that can and should be done to prevent food losses and food waste, they provide important direction for all players including EU citizens themselves.
