Unlocking Investments for Forest-Based Industry SMEs: Insights from the 1st Thematic Workshop
On November 26, 2024, the Rzeszów Regional Development Agency (RARR) hosted the 1st thematic workshop titled “Role of Policy Instruments in Promoting Funds and Unlocking Public and Private Investments to Enhance the Competitiveness of Forest-Based Industry SMEs.” This event, organized as part of the FBI4EU project, became an important platform for discussions on financial and legal incentives, the challenges and opportunities influencing public and private investments, and strategies for fostering public-private partnerships.
The workshop gathered key stakeholders from regional authorities, forest-based industry SMEs, financial institutions, and European project partners. The diverse group of participants enabled a dynamic exchange of experiences and knowledge, leading to a comprehensive understanding of the factors driving investment in the sector. Throughout the sessions, it became clear that tailored financial incentives and simplified regulatory frameworks are crucial for encouraging both public and private stakeholders to invest in forest-based industries. While some regions have already successfully implemented supportive policy instruments, others are still seeking the right tools to boost competitiveness and innovation in the sector.
Discussions highlighted the importance of cross-regional cooperation and knowledge exchange in overcoming common challenges. Participants agreed that many SMEs struggle with access to financing due to complicated procedures and limited awareness of available funding opportunities. Public institutions were urged to simplify administrative processes and promote existing financial instruments more effectively. At the same time, the role of private investors was recognized as essential in providing not only capital but also expertise and market access.
One of the key takeaways from the workshop was the recognition that successful public-private partnerships could unlock significant growth potential for SMEs in the forest-based industry. Participants emphasized that fostering trust and aligning the interests of public and private actors is a long-term process that requires clear communication, transparency, and mutual understanding. Several examples of good practices from different European regions were shared, demonstrating how strategic cooperation can lead to increased competitiveness, innovation, and sustainable growth.
The workshop concluded with a strong call for continued dialogue and cooperation at regional and interregional levels. The insights gathered during the discussions will contribute to a comprehensive report prepared by RARR, summarizing the key findings and offering recommendations for improving investment frameworks and promoting public-private partnerships. This report will serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, helping them develop more effective strategies to support SMEs and enhance the competitiveness of the forest-based industry across Europe.
