Micro consolidation hubs for sustainable last mile deliveries
Description
A micro-consolidation hub will be built for the storage of goods and their last-mile delivery by sustainable modes to serve the Sea Park area of Rimini, a regeneration project area that will radically transform mobility from a private car ownership model to a pedestrian and cycle-friendly environment.
Rimini's pilot involves using an area of the seafront to test the viability of a micro-consolidation hub installed within a car-restricted area to redistribute goods more efficiently using soft modes (cargo bikes and lightweight e-vehicles). Small-scale on-ground testing of innovative last-mile deliveries will be implemented through a pilot action in collaboration with relevant stakeholders, exploiting an established practice tested in the city of Mechelen.
Surveys and studies will support estimating the freight transport demand attracted by the coastal strip to identify the optimum location for the micro-consolidation hub and re-design the whole supply chain and logistics network to accommodate deliveries by sustainable modes.
Pilot testing is defined by:
- markets and goods: B2C, food, parcels, books (arriving from the library) and luggages (arriving from railway station)
- daily operations management of micro-hub by a commercial operator to be identified through public procurement procedure
- matchmaking: awareness campaign to connect retailers and commercial/shipping operators
- operating model: vans/trucks carry goods to the hub, which will be then delivered to final-end user destinations and pick-up points within the Sea Park area by the micro-hub operator using their cargo bikes or e-vehicles purchased in SPOTLOG
- social dimension: from the hub, goods can also be delivered by citizens by using their own cargo bikes whenever the destination pick-up points and end-users are located along their routes
- uptake: if the pilot is successful, vans and trucks will no longer be allowed in the Sea Park area and the measure will be included in the next SUMP update.
