Project summary
CONTEXT
Although the share of renewable energy is increasing rapidly at EU level, the carbon dioxide emissions worldwide are still increasing. Among the challenges to decarbonize the energy sector are:
- Reducing fossil fuels in end-user sectors, particularly industry and transport.
- Ensuring the security of the energy supply.
- Upholding environmental sustainability, including socio-economic aspects.
The set of proposals included in the Fit for 55 provides a coherent and balanced framework for reaching the EU climate objectives. It specifically focuses on shifting from fossil to renewable and low-carbon fuels, such as hydrogen, and proposes a review of the EU gas market design.
In addition, in 2020, the European Commission proposed a hydrogen strategy for a climate-neutral Europe that aims at accelerating the development of clean hydrogen as a cornerstone for a climate-neutral energy system.
OBJECTIVES
UNIFHY focuses on the hard-to-abate sectors in which the energy demand cannot be reduced and electrification is not an option.
Each partner region will identify these sectors and analyse what the policies are in place, if any, to support these areas in their decarbonization.
Additionally, the project will work on developing strategies that optimize the energy production, such as the use of excess renewable energy for hydrogen generation.
PROJECT PARTNERS
- Consortium Extremadura Energy Agency (ES)

- Lubelskie Voivodeship (PL)
What will this project change
UNIFHY will analyse policies and provide insights for policymakers in six EU regions, identifying good practices in the field of renewable and low-carbon fuels and improved governance of ERDF funds.
UNIFHY will promote public-private partnerships, collaboration and support to uptake innovative technologies, such as green hydrogen, helping identify end-users for these technologies.
UNIFHY will also encourage knowledge-sharing among its partners regarding evaluation and assessment tools to prioritize investments in this field.
UNIFHY partner regions will improve their policy instruments after addressing existing barriers and finding solutions that fit each regional context.
