Extremadura to Host Spain's First Electrolyser Factory
In June 2024, Golendus, with the support of Lobón Town Council, organized a conference on green hydrogen targeted to professionals in the field, cooperative representatives, agricultural associations as well as private and public sector representatives.
In the opening of the event, the Director General for Industry, Energy and Mines of Extremadura's regional government, Mrs. Raquel Prieto Pastor, highlighted the good potential to develop green hydrogen production projects in the region, and she emphasized that the town of Lobón will host the first electrolyser factory in the country.
The region of Extremadura does not only have beneficial resources, such as a large capacity of dammed water and the lead generation of renewable energy, but additionally, the regional government, Junta de Extremadura, supports and encourages the development of new projects by simplifying procedures to speed up permits, and it facilitates new installations.
Potential for Hydrogen Production in Extremadura
Given the region's characteristics, green hydrogen has a huge potential for farmers and livestock breeders to reduce their fossil fuel consumption and their associated costs. It brings an opportunity for the economic and industrial development and growth in Extremadura, with a special focus on rural areas. By producing hydrogen, higher levels of decarbonization will be achieved, and having local sources of energy will imply independency of third countries, ensuring greater security of supply.
Therefore, the production of green hydrogen in the region has been declared of general interest and is set as a regional priority towards the energy transition. For new projects to be developed, a collaboration between the public and the private sector is required, promoting relationships between companies and the administration. And it will have a very positive impact in the regional employment, economy and sustainability.
