Project summary
3F GREEN MODEL will address the challenges involved in the adaptation of the agri-food and forestry sectors in the partner countries to the European Green Deal and to the EU circular economy strategy, updated by the Circular Economy Action Plan. Being aware of the wide scope of this issue, the project will focus on improving the partners’ policy instruments through a deeper and more conscious application of circular economy principles to biowaste and by-products generated across the agri-food and forestry value chains, taking into account the different bioclimatic conditions and production structures across the EU.
The generation of waste and by-products along the agri-food and forestry value chains is an environmental and economical challenge both for the producers and the public authorities, as they are a relevant GHG emission source, and their appropriate management and subsequent disposal may entail significant costs. Under a circular economy approach, however, biowaste shall be treated as a biological resource, an increasingly important resource. Through the 3F GREEN MODEL policy learning and good practice exchange, the partners will be improving or completing the policy instruments dealing with different flows of agri-food and forestry biowaste and by-products, to mitigate environmental impacts and realise their business and job creation potential.
The project partners represent the diversity of the EU agri-food and forestry value chain (Atlantic, Continental, Mediterranean and Nordic) and combine different territorial scope (local, regional, national) and thematic expertise (agriculture, breeding, forestry, food industry…). The partnership will pay particular attention to the business and job creation potential of bioindustries that turn waste and by-products into valuable resources, as it may be a promising area for the diversification of the economy and the resilience of rural communities, helping to address the challenge of depopulation.
