EKIOLA Lea-Artibai, Biscay's Pioneer Solar Cooperative

After two years of planning, the socialization phase has begun! Mayors and representatives from Etxebarri, Markina, Xemein, Berriatua, Ispaster, Ondarroa, and Lekeitio gathered to kick off this innovative project sponsored by the Basque Energy Agency and KREA.


Residents and small businesses are invited to join the cooperative and contribute to a new solar energy production facility. The goal is to have 649 cooperative members and even explore the possibility of building a solar photovoltaic park!


EKIOLA Lea Artibai aims to produce 1,369 MWh/year, meeting the energy needs of the region. Each member's yearly contribution is set at 1,552.00 euros, aligning with EKIOLA's principle of self-sufficiency in 100% of electricity demand.


Save the date for informational sessions in Etxebarri (March 11), Markina-Xemein (March 12), Ondarroa (March 13), Lekeitio (March 14), and Berriatua (March 18) at 18:30. Learn about the project, explore benefits, and get personalized reports on your electricity consumption.


Beyond homes, EKIOLA extends its offering to small retail stores, businesses, and sector establishments. It's an opportunity for everyone to be part of the renewable energy movement!


EKIOLA is a collaboration between the Basque Energy Agency and KREA, aiming to create energy communities where citizens meet 100% of their electricity needs. The cooperative model ensures a 30-year guaranteed performance for the solar park installation.


EKIOLA isaligning with EU policies for 2030, aiming for 32% of consumed energy from renewable sources. It's a model for transitioning to a sustainable energy future.
