About this good practice
The Archaeological Museum adopted a visitor oriented strategy which included the use of digital tools and communication technologies by the visitors.
They now are able to reach the information of the exhibitions much easier by using 11 multimedia applications, which are located inside the permanent exhibitions in an ongoing dialogue with the exhibits.
The Museum also presents in a special hall a unique digital exhibition under the title “Macedonia from fragments to pixels”. The visitors have the opportunity to discover the Ancient Greek Culture which flourished in Macedonia through the digital management of masterpieces and emblematic antiquities from all the areas of Northern Greece. Videos, touch screens, digital games and interactive systems are the tools.
This exhibition differs from a conventional one, as the new technologies modern allow visitors to access unique artefacts, archaeological sites and monuments, offering a new interactive experience that combines information and learning through playing. Hence, visitors can explore digital representations of ancient artefacts, travel in time and space and discover, in a simple and modern way, aspects of the of the history and archaeology of ancient Macedonia, through its virtual image. The new practice has made the visit more educational, memorable and entertaining and as a consequence, the number of visitors has increased. Visitors, especially the youngers, have the chance for a different, modern experience.

Resources needed
Technology – Hellas (FORTH) – Institute of Computer Science. This was a sponsorship to the Museum. The good function of the applications is accomplished by the Museums’ technical staff.
Evidence of success
An evaluation was carried out and the results demonstrate the positive views of the visitors.Their comments are focused mainly to the opportunity to learn through digital games which provide joy and multisensory experience.
Potential for learning or transfer
The digital exhibition “Macedonia from fragments to pixels” is an internationally unique exhibition consisted only of interactive systems which are based on the research outcomes of the ICS-FORTH’s Ambient Intelligence Programme. Researchers develop intelligent environments, capable to adapt to the needs and demands of human users. These interactive systems are smaller or larger artefacts through which Museum visitors can explore digital reproductions of ancient Greek art masterpieces without the use of keyboard or mouse.
This exhibition alongside with the 11 applications could function as a case study for a modern approach of the cultural products and the use of new technologies. The public can have a novel relationship with exceptional artefacts of the past, enjoying an interactive experience that combines information and learning with entertainment. This time, forget about the usual museum rule of "Do not touch”.
