About this good practice
Asti Museum Foundation was born on October 2018 in order to manage the network of 5 museums in the city of Asti. The Foundation represents a flexible way to manage cultural heritage. The Municipality of Asti was the previous owner of the Museums and since it is a Public Administration, it had difficulties in the management of them. In fact the Municipality cannot invest in new activities or cultural exhibitions because the risk of not reaching enough revenues to cover costs was too high. In this sense, the Museums were not active and also no new employed people were hired. The decision to go in the direction of the Foundation was obligatory. The Municiaplity decided to ask fundings for the restoration of one of its Museum, the Alfieri Palace (where Vittorio Alfieri born and lived). A big restoration site started with the Fundings of ROP ERDF 2007-2013. After the restoration, the Foundation started (October 2018) its activity on the territory. The first biggest exhibition has been about Marc Chagall that called people from Italy and Europe. The Municipality signed an agreement with Asti Museum Foundation and the Bank Foundation of Asti (Savings bank of Asti): it is an agreement for the management of 5 Museums for 5 years. The Asti Museum Foundation received from the Mayor of Asti 5 Museums (and in particular the Alfieri Palace just restored) to be managed. The Asti Museum Foundation is not for profit because it must reinvest the profit in other projects.
Resources needed
600.000 euro ROP ERDF 2007-2013
Evidence of success
High impact on safeguarding of cultural heritage thanks to wide process of restoration. An excellent economic viability thanks to the collaboration with a bank foundation that funds 800.000 euro/year to the Asti Museum Foundation. And, good social impact, taking into account that the main building has been closed for 20 years and its reopening was warmly welcomed by citizens.
Potential for learning or transfer
It’s a good practice because it is a represents an efficient model of cultural management: a public heritage is managed by a public/private Foundation in order to be valorised in not for profit way.
