About this good practice
TABACOEX is a cooperative composed of 20 associates and 518 farmers, destined to the dry of tobacco. In the beginning, they counted with 59 dry houses and thanks to the success of this initiative they had to expand to 77, with a production capacity of 1.000.000 kg of tobacco.
Previously to the construction of these dry houses, each farmer of the cooperative used to dry the tobacco in their warehouse, with conventional methods.
In 2010, the cooperative decided to group all the needs these crops had in the drying phase of the production, and do it with renewable energy.
This had meant, that the farmers will reduce the power cost, and join efforts in the different process of the growing and the dry of the tobacco.
At that time in 2010, the government had launched a specific grant to tobacco agriculture, in which the main aim was to change the conventional production of heat or power energy to RES systems. Promoting at the same time, the recycling of the different wastes in the area, in this case, the olives stone.
Seizing this situation, they had applied to this grant and installed one boiler houses with a heating capacity of 11,4 MW that had a consumption of 1500 Tn of olive stone from the region. To help the reduce the power energy consumption that this factory had, they changed the mechanical equipment, to one more efficient, and also the drying system to others with less needs of energy.

Resources needed
In 2010 the cooperative had applied to a grant that coverts the 60% of the total investment.
Evidence of success
TABACOEX had improved the drying process and change the use of fossil fuel to the olive stone fuel (biomass).
Increasing the drying capacity, from 59 dry houses, with a 750.000 kg of tobacco, to 77 producing 1.000.000 kg.

Potential for learning or transfer
This cooperative is not the first one that had improved the drying system. Since 1991, when this enterprise born, until 2010, the consumption of fuel and energy this factory had had, was a huge problem for the farmers. Since the construction of the 77 dry houses, TABACOEX reduced the energy consumption, and increase the economic savings with the installation of the biomass boilers and the optimization of the different phases of the process, causing an improvement in the factory.
The Decree 83/2010, was an innovating grant which main targets were
- Energy savings.
- Use of biomass as fuel, coming from wastes materials.
- Joining needs of the cured processes.
This grant has been used as a reference for other decrees that influenced the installation of different RES in the industry, as the decree 115/2015 or 110/2018.
