This is the good practice's implementation level. It can be national, regional or local.
About this good practice
The community bee garden brings together volunteers who carry out activities connected with educational activities aimed at protecting the environment and with the preservation of a historical monument in the centre of Prešov. Prešov is the city located in eastern part
of Slovakia. The mainstay of this initiative are bees, which were located on the upper terrace of the Franciscan Bastion on May 20th, 2019 on the occasion of World Bee Day, declared by the UN. The reason why the beehives were located in the centre of Prešov was to draw attention to the urgent need to protect bees and biodiversity. The next step was the creation of Community Garden - therefore, in the middle of the garden, elevated flowerbeds with the planting of insect-loving plants gradually began to emerge. Several volunteers are involved in the maintenance of the bastion and in the creation of raised flowerbeds, which is why this project has a community dimension. The community bee garden initiated nationwide research aimed at determining the degree of environmental load on heavy metals using bees as a bioindicator. In this activity, they
work closely with the University of Prešov and other universities in Slovakia and with several dozen beekeepers throughout Slovakia.
Various events related to environmental protection are organized in Community garden: Ecological night (series of professional lectures), presentations for school children, beekeeping course, concerts, etc.

Resources needed
This project has no sources of funding. Activities are carried out by volunteers in their free time. To create elevated flowerbeds, they use waste material such as discarded pallets, etc. The plants for planting are provided by volunteers themselves or some of them were provided by the University.
Evidence of success
This project has several positive benefits: support of community life,
preservation of historical monuments, environmental education and training activities, scientific activities. So far, about 30 people have taken part in the activities, about 150 children have visited the bastion as part of their environmental education, 8 professional lecturers spoke at the Ecological Night event and 90 listeners visited it.

Potential for learning or transfer
A community bee garden can be a model for other projects on how to connect the historic space in the city centre with a specific goal -environmental awareness. Historic spaces are thus gaining a new dimension of use. The philosophy is also interesting: preserving a
historical monument and saving the environment. Also interesting is the concept of placing living organisms in a historic building - bees and raised beds with planting insect-loving plants, which gives this monument a new dimension - "environmental bastion, bastion of life, ...". The bastion is also about connecting people and creating a relationship - about creating a relationship between man and nature or even about creating people's
relationships with each other.
