Canals 5D
About this good practice
Canals5D is a project that digitally reconstructs important cultural-historical sites in all of Zuid-Holland: from Leiden to Dordrecht, and from Gouda to Maassluis. From ports, bridges and market squares to city gates, canals, dams and locks. These places are all connected by the almost ramified Dutch water network of rives, canals, waterways and lakes.
5D relates to the different dimensions:
2D Flat: City Plan/map
3D Space: Virtual surrounding
4D Time: Virtual space in the past, present and future
5D Information: Knowledge and experience
Via the Canals 5D platform you can look around at all these places in different time periods. It becomes clear how places changed and how they relate to each other. The main aims of Canals 5D are:
1) Raising awareness
2) Story telling from the local perspective
3) Based on extensive professional research
4) Provide public access to knowledge
5) Stable and sustainable
6) Free use of all content
7) For free
8) For everybody

Evidence of success
Canals 5D brings places and people together, but it also connects a large number of parties from the heritage, culture and education sectors, recreation, tourism and governments along the water. Canals5D thus forms a completely unique partnership where local, regional and national organizations are linked. On the platform https://www.canals5d.nl there are already 18 locations digitally reconstructed, with 14 already planned for next year.
Potential for learning or transfer
There is a huge potential for learning as is evident from the success of the project. It introduces a new way of experiencing both the Urban and Green & Blue areas, and with a touch on your screen you can receive all kinds of cultural-historical information of that location. It opens up the natural and cultural heritage to a broader audience.
The platform that is developed connects different locations and makes them easily accessible.
