About this good practice
Border regions between Spain and Portugal are characterised by depopulation and low rates of GDPpc in comparison with national (and EU) rates. These regions are rich in cultural and natural heritage and have a strong potential as tourism destinations.
In this framework, tourism appears as a strong candidate to create socioeconomic development and employment in those regions, at the same time that promotes the benefits of the sustainable management of the cultural and natural heritage.
DESTINO FRONTERA aims to address these challenges by creating cross-border tourism products for the border between Spain and Portugal.
The steps followed by partners were:
1–Create a Cross-border Tourism Strategy to promote tourism at border regions, developed by experts in close contact with sectorial and local stakeholders of the tourism sector.
2–Define a common offer. Following the common strategy, cross-border products were defined in 4 thematic lines: cultural heritage, natural heritage, water and enogastronomy.
3-Common marketing:
-Common image.
-Touristic Guide. Divided into the 4 main thematic lines, it summarises the main items of the rich touristic offer of the ES-PT border.
-Promotional comic. It is a very visual and easy to read material to promote the main items of the regions.
-Presenting the concept. Partners organized the 1st Forum of Tourism at Border Regions in Europe. This Forum joined around 200 people coming from all the border regions between Spain and Portugal

Potential for learning or transfer
This practice has a very high potential for transference to other border regions.
All border regions have common resources and potential to structure their offer as a common destination.
The working methodology, the involvement of stakeholders and even the organization of the thematic priorities could be easily adopted by other border regions.
The promotional activities, even those more innovative as the comic are also replicable in other territorial contexts.
