About this good practice
The Eco-Gozo policy promotes, mainly, the installation and the use of renewable energy sources such as PV panels, solar water heaters and micro-wind turbines. Biomass energy is also promoted due to the high concentration of animals’ farms in the region, for the generation of energy from animal and agricultural waste. One of the main actions of the plan is the establishment of the ecoGozo label, in order to identify and certify:
- Organic agricultural products,
- Restaurants offering local dishes, organic meals and dishes prepared from local production,
- Environment management standards for private and public buildings,
- Diving centers respecting the environmental code of practices,
- Gozitan crafts and products in line with the ecoGozo environmental standards.
Part of the Eco-Gozo policy is also the promotion of eco-friendly transport using bio-fuels and of reserved parking areas for hybrid and electric vehicles.
Finally, the policy includes:
- Promotion of nearly zero energy buildings (nZEB),
- Scholarship schemes in science, engineering, planning and architecture,
- Energy audits in public buildings,
- Tax credit system for industries and commercial outlets using RES,
- Green award for enterprises, households and villages,
- Energy-saving lighting for public spaces and offices,
- Free consultation and financial incentives for citizens who wants to convert their houses in energy-efficient ones.
