About this good practice
The study aimed to observe practices during the road works with the heavy machines on site traffic junction in the context of fuel consumption and CO2 emissions to the environment. The study was conducted within 3 weeks of construction work junction. The study included observation of the construction site (logistics strategies, transport of construction materials, energy efficiency of the heavy machines operators). The conclusions:
• Modernization of used construction equipment, in terms of substitution of fossil fuels with biofuels;
• Input supply good planning practices and resource use;
• Entering a good planned storage of materials (both loose and others) in order to minimize the need for their relocation on the construction site;
• Introduction of correction logistics plans aimed at an optimization of transport routes
• Conduct awareness training for operators of construction machinery, to improve energy efficiency and increase awareness in reducing carbon footprint;
• Periodic testing of the technical condition of vehicles, with increased emphasis on the emission of greenhouse gases, carried out for different load states of the machine;
• Selection of the size of used machinery, equipment and vehicles for their optimal use;

Evidence of success
Good planning guideline when using heavy machines has been published during that analyze. Main issues (rules) from that guidaline have been handed after winning a tender (to improve good planning, minimize greenhouse gas emissions, and to improve energy efficiency in transport).
Through a change in behaviour it is relatively easy to reduce fuel consumption for heavy machinery by approximately 10%.
Cooperation was established between the company that won the tender and the city office.

Potential for learning or transfer
This best practice was identified through discussion between partners of the SEECA project. Niepolomice Municipality identified the need of implementation of good planning when using heavy machines during the road works. Raising standards of planning, significant fuel savings, co-operation between public authorities and private and public companies , less CO2, improvement in silence factor, air protection, change the way of using heavy machines.
PB can be transferred to other region (eg. Uppsala region), easy to duplicate, a small amount of resources.
