About this good practice
PROBLEM ADDRESSED: Two issues, 1)Increasing the anti-inflammatory and anti-lipi functions of dairy and wine products through the integration of compounds from three aromatic plants (Origanum vulgaris, Rosmarinus officinalis and Salvia Triloba), and 2) technologies for identifying, isolating, analysing and re-using the bioactive compunds of the said aromatic plants.
HOW RESULTS WERE REACHED: DENOP assessed the various agro-eco-friendly products with the best yield and evaluated the yield of plants for bioactive ingredients. Fractions of extracts from the pending aromatic tension plants have been successfully incorporated into dairy products such as cheese "feta". For wine products, the existence of ethanol to those which obstructed the performance of biological tests has shown that it is possible to use essential oils and extracts of all three plants in the development of innovative winemaking products with high added value. The results are encouraging for anti-inflammatory behavior and anti-lipid protection.
STAKEHOLDERS INVOLVED: Technological Institute of W. Macedonia, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, University of Ioannina, 3 enterprises (DIOSCURIDES CO - production & processing of aromatic and medicinal plants, KOURELLAS SA - dairy products and ALPHA ESTATE - winery and vineyard) from W. Macedonia and the co-funded programme SYNERGASIA 2007-2013 involving EU & National funds of the Secretariat general of research and technology (GSRT).

Resources needed
The involved research institutions engaged 3 scientific teams of PhD researchers and 3 scientific coordinators, while the e companies utilized their own lab facilities. Total budget was some 600 000€, 80% by "Synergasia" programme (ERDF 2007-2013 and National funds), and 20% private sector.
Evidence of success
The analysis of the biological activity of the extracts and the compounds contained therein showed significant cytoprotective ability (protection against oxidative damage to DNA and inhibition of apoptosis) in living human cells exposed to oxidative stress. Fractions of extracts derived have been successfully incorporated into dairy products and can be used to develop new innovative dairy products with high added value due to the anti-inflammatory behavior and the anti-lipid protection.
Potential for learning or transfer
DENOP provided benefits to the regional economy especially in the dairy products, which is a sub-sector of Agrifood that is RIS3 priority for W. Macedonia, in terms of developing new innovative dairy products of "feta" cheese with high added value due to the anti-inflammatory behavior and the anti-lipid protection. Also DENOP engaged 3 research institutions from different greek regions with 3 significant regional SMEs, enhancing and promoting interregional Research to Business co-operation, promoting and exploitating also R&D technological solutions. The gained know-how is easy to be transferred, while the production of new dairy products is part of the always crucial aspect for businesses concerning the improvement of their places into the markets.
