Noprofit organization of large enterprises for sustainability, CSR & social economy in EmiliaRomagna
About this good practice
In 2000, three companies from the Emilia-Romagna region’s cooperative sector attended the first EU conference on Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) in Brussels. Once back home, with other 4 large companies based in the Region gather resources & start-up a no-profit association aimed at promoting mutual learning in the framework of sustainability & CSR and supporting the development of the social economy sector at territorial level. It is linked to the collaborative governance of non-profit organisation build up by large and medium companies to promote sustainability and CSR. It shows that large companies can be leaders in boosting strategic partnerships and capacity building on sustainability. Today, ImprontaEtica counts 36 member companies from diverse sectors e.g. finance, agribusiness, transport, personal care, facility, engineering, utilities. All services offered by ImprontaEtica are ensured to the companies’ members through an annual membership fee. Both individual and joint training activities, benchmarking, research action, support in building strategic partnerships are part of the services. Member companies elect a Steering Committee (SC) with a 3-year term of office. The SC appoints President and Vice President. ImprontaEtica delivers a strategic plan (SP) every 3 years, to identify the main activities relevant to promote CSR. The SP focuses on working methods & goals to be achieved with member companies e.g. increase capacities to build new partnership.
Resources needed
The members pay an annual fee from 3.000 to 6.000€, thus ImprontaEtica does not depend on grants. Daily operations are ensured by 4 full-time permanent staff: 1 coordinator, 3 project managers. President, vice-president and councillor are voluntary positions covered by different member companies.
Evidence of success
Based on the impact assessment 2020-2022 ImprontaEtica provided member companies with:
10 position papers in relation to European and national sustainability policies
23 individual services concerning research activities, assessment of CSR, benchmark, trainings, support in building strategic partnerships
Up to 20 new connections between member companies activated
4 joint training session organized
2 EU project proposals submitted on their behalf
Over 65 articles on the topic of sustainability
Potential for learning or transfer
The collaborative governance and in turn, the financial sustainability capacities ensured through the annual membership fee are both crucial element that make it a good practice to support the development of the social economy sector in the Emilia-Romagna region.
ImprontaEtica is not only promoting a cultural ecosystem to foster sustainability, but is also showing how member companies can benefit from a partnership approach and thus facilitate mutual learning. The collaborative governance based on the annual membership fees allowed a considerable growth in term of volume of services the association is capable to offer. It can inspire to advocate for the improvement of regional policies on microfinance to foster social enterprises at territorial level.
This no-profit association created by large companies has shown how together large enterprises can lead and support the development of a cultural ecosystem to promote sustainability by involving SMEs, start-ups etc.
