O sabor dos Ancares (The taste of Ancares): "A Carqueixa"
About this good practice
Last decades, rural depopulation and the decline of traditional livestock practices led to the closure of small farms. In 1994, 27 residents formed "A Carqueixa Cooperative", to preserve traditional livestock methods and improve quality life. Nearly 30 years later, their decision has proven successful.
A Carqueixa advocates for extensive livestock farming, free-range breeding, and natural feeding in rural areas with environmental protection. They manage over 5,000 cows across 10,000 hectares in a depopulated mountain area.
"O Sabor dos Ancares" project (2019-2024) has empowered the cooperative by renewing its sale's channels. Achievements in the first four years include launching an online store, opening a butcher shop in Lugo (the most important city in this area), collaborating with restaurants, supplying INDITEX canteens, and introducing a line of cooked dishes. These initiatives have increased partners, tripled livestock sales, and enabled the cooperative to derive 50% of its revenue from its own channels.
The project tackles challenges such as generational renewal, climate change, and market shifts. Since 2022, A Carqueixa has also achieved a gender-balanced governing board, with 43% of its members being women.
A Carqueixa stands out in Lugo and Galicia for its commitment to food safety and quality. With over 200 families and 215 direct jobs, it supports biodiversity, fire prevention, and sustainable development, keeping the rural environment vibrant.
Resources needed
To create the brand, the online web for sales, the cooperative invested €55,000 of which approximately 50% were funds from Rural Development Plan.
To open the butcher shop, an investment of €55,000 was also made, of which they obtained 25% of PAC funds (EAFRD).
The project initially created 3 jobs.
Evidence of success
- They received multiple awards like 2024 Cooperative Values Award, 2024 Rural Entrepreneurship Award, 2021 Agader Rural Development Award, 2021 Aresa Rural Development Award.
- New sales channels increase profitability by 200€ to 300€ per calf, raising farmers earnings by 2000/3000€ per year.
- A Carqueixa brought together 215 family farms and represents 750 indirect jobs.
Potential for learning or transfer
"O Sabor dos Ancares" project is highly transferable to other regions due to several key factors that can be adapted to different rural contexts. The cooperative model allows small producers to collaborate, strengthening their market position and improving economic sustainability, which can be replicated in areas with similar characteristics. Sustainable practices, such as extensive livestock farming and free-range shepherding, promote ecosystem health and can be applied in regions with adequate natural resources. Innovation and digitalization modernize operations and expand markets. Collaboration with universities to enhance livestock practices and drive research is also replicable. Additionally, the valorization of traditions and the diversification of local products add value and open new markets. The key is to innovate conservatively, evaluate the approach, and then invest in the brand. The proposal must remain flexible to adapt to customer needs.
